I never really embraced the whole advent calendar thing but now that I have kids I love them. I enjoy seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces each day as they open the next door or look in the next pocket and discover the treasure waiting there for them. Last year we did the LEGO Advent Calendar and they had to take it in turns each day to open the door and find the next LEGO piece but they ended up sharing and working together to build their little Christmas scene so it was a good brotherly bonding activity and a great non-chocolate advent calendar option.
But what about adults? Don’t we deserve 24 days of little treats? We think we do, so we’ve discovered some amazing luxury advent calendars that put the regular chocolate versions to shame. Luxury advent calendars have become more popular over the last few years as Australians embrace the festive season with gusto and the commercial side of Christmas at an ever-increasing rate.

Advent calendars date back to 19th century Germany where the days until Christmas were marked by a chalk line, religious pictures hung each day on the wall or candles were lit. The first commercial advent calendars were produced in the early 1930s by a printer who came up with the little door design and hid pictures and phrases behind them. It wasn’t until many years later that small gifts like chocolate were placed behind the doors.
These days luxury advent calendars reveal far more than chocolate and as you can see there is a huge spread of what can be included in the countdown until Christmas. We’d love to hear how you do the Christmas countdown. Do you use advent calendars? Have you tried any like these? Share your feedback below or on our Facebook page and enjoy the next seven weeks until Christmas is finally here!
